Below you will find a general chart for all specs you can find on a HDTV and what is better for each. Keep in mind that these are rough generalizations and there are few exceptions. You can find these exceptions by reading the articles on this site.

Display Size Preference based, bigger can give worse quality
Resolution 1920×1080 is the best
Contrast ratio Higher dynamic the better
Brightness Brighter the better
Viewing angle Bigger better
Resolution playback 1080p
Response time Lower the better
Backlight System LED is better
Brand More it is known, the better
Extra inputs At least 2x HDMI,
Aspect ratio 16:9 is ideal
Refresh rate At least 60Hz, 120Hz ideal, but higher the better
Plasma or LCD This depends on what it is going to be used for
